In Naples it’s Christmas all year round! For centuries, skilled craftsmen have been working every day to build fantastic Nativity Scenes, the result of authentic devotion and a very long tradition. Would you like to discover the symbols and history of this noble yet very traditional art? Then follow us on this fascinating journey and visit the largest living Nativity Scene in the world… Naples!
During this tour you will enjoy the most important Nativity Scenes in the city, from the famous Cuciniello in the San Martino Museum to the unusual Poliscene Nativity in the Church of San Nicola alla Carità. Passing through the lively market of Pignasecca, you will arrive at the Museodivino, which hold the smallest Nativity Scenes in the world.
After a refreshing break based on Neapolitan products, the tour will head to the monastery of Santa Chiara and the colorful street of San Gregorio Armeno, where you will discover some of the most well-known craftsmen of the Neapolitan Nativity Scene. Finally, our guide will show you the extraordinary Seven Acts of Mercy by Caravaggio, a work in which the poor devils of the alleys become the main characters in a painting full of theatrical charge. At the Pio Monte della Misericordia art gallery you can also admire the works of Ulderico Pinfildi, the master of Nativity Scenes, inspired by the art of Caravaggio.
The tour will start at 9:00 at the entrance to the Certosa di San Martino. The visit ends at around 10:30 and you will move to the Pignasecca market by funicular. The following stops will be the Church of San Nicola alla Carità and the Museodivino. At 13:00 you will enjoy lunch in a well-known local restaurant.
Next stop will be the Monastery of Santa Chiara at 14:00 and then you will venture into the old town centre to discover the street of Nativity Scenes. The stop at the Pio Monte della Misericordia is scheduled at around 15:45. The tour finishes at 16:30.
